Leveson counsel appointed judge

8 May 2013 Last updated at 13:11 GMT Robert Jay QC Robert Jay was widely praised for his performances during the Leveson Inquiry The lead counsel to the Leveson Inquiry has been appointed as a High Court judge, the Ministry of Justice says.

Robert Jay QC, 53, was widely praised for his interrogations during the inquiry into the culture, practice and ethics of the press.

Last year, he was named Barrister of the Year at The Lawyer Awards and Human Rights & Public Law Silk of the Year at The Chambers Bar Awards.

High Court judges are appointed on merit following an open selection.

Mr Jay's appointment will take effect from 4 June and he will sit at the Queen's Bench Division of the High Court.

As well as Mr Jay, it was also announced on Wednesday that Miss Susan Lascelles Carr QC and Judge Andrew Gilbart QC have been appointed as High Court judges.
