End of season ups and downs

BBC Sport outlines the promotion and relegation issues - and European qualifiers - in England and Scotland.

The top four teams qualify for the Champions League, with the fourth-placed team entering at the play-off round, while the top three come in at the group stage.

Manchester United clinched the Premier League title with a 3-0 win over Aston Villa on 22 April, while Manchester City can make sure of their Champions League place if they win at Swansea on Saturday, or if other results go their way.

Swansea celebrate League Cup victory Swansea celebrate League Cup final victory

English clubs have three places in the Europa League - for the FA Cup winners, the Capital One Cup winners and the fifth-placed team in the Premier League.

Swansea City were the first team to book their place in Europe by winning the Capital One Cup, and will enter the Europa League in the third qualifying round.

The fifth-placed team will enter the Europa League in the play-off round, with the FA Cup winners moving straight into the group stage.

If Manchester City qualify for the Champions League, their FA Cup final opponents Wigan will qualify for the Europa League, whether or not they win the final.

The top three countries in Uefa's Respect Fair Play league get an extra Europa League place, which is given to the highest-placed team in the top flight's Fair Play table that has not yet qualified for Europe.

In Uefa's interim rankings on 31 December 2012, England were fourth in the Fair Play table.

The bottom three teams will be relegated to the Championship. Reading and Queens Park Rangers were both relegated after drawing 0-0 with each other on 26 April.

The champions and runners-up are promoted to the Premier League, and the next four teams will contest the play-offs.

Celebrations as Cardiff win promotion Celebrations as Cardiff win promotion

Cardiff won promotion on 16 April with a goalless draw against Charlton and clinched the title with a 1-1 draw at Burnley four days later, and the second automatic promotion place is between Hull and Watford.

Hull can clinch promotion if they beat Cardiff in their final game, or if they match Watford's result at home to Leeds. But Watford will leapfrog the Tigers if they win and Hull fail to win, or if they draw and Hull lose.

Brighton are the only other side guaranteed a play-off spot, with Crystal Palace, Bolton, Nottingham Forest and Leicester competing for the other two places on the final day.

The bottom three teams will be relegated to League One. Bristol City were relegated on 16 April after a 1-0 home defeat by Birmingham, while the other two relegation spots will be decided on the final day of the season, although Wolves are in the most danger.

Doncaster celebrate promotion Doncaster were promoted as champions after a thrilling final game denied Brentford

Doncaster Rovers are promoted to the Championship as League One champions after their thrilling 1-0 win at third-placed Brentford on 27 April. Runners-up Bournemouth were promoted a week earlier following their 3-1 home win against Carlisle, but a goalless draw at Tranmere on the final day cost them the title.

Brentford will contest the play-offs with Yeovil Town, Sheffield United and Swindon Town for the final promotion place.

Bury became the first Football League team to be relegated after losing 1-0 to Oldham on 13 April, while Hartlepool United and Portsmouth were both condemned to League Two without kicking a ball when Oldham beat Yeovil 1-0 three days later.

Pompey were effectively down anyway as they knew they would be deducted 10 points when they came out of administration, which they did on 19 April, while the fourth and final relegation place went to Scunthorpe United who, despite a 3-1 win over Swindon on the final day, finished three points from safety after Colchester won 2-0 at Carlisle.

Gillingham Gillingham players lift the League Two trophy

Gillingham became the first Football League team to be promoted when they beat Torquay 1-0 on 6 April, and clinched the title with a 2-2 home draw against AFC Wimbledon a fortnight later.

They will be joined in League One by Rotherham United and Port Vale, who clinched promotion on the final day by beating Aldershot 2-0 and drawing 1-1 at Wycombe respectively.

Burton Albion, Cheltenham Town, Northampton Town and Bradford City will compete in the play-offs for the fourth and final promotion place.

Barnet are relegated to the Conference Premier along with Aldershot . Barnet lost 2-0 at Northampton on the final day while Aldershot, who finish bottom of the table, lost by the same scoreline at Rotherham.

Mansfield celebrate promotion Mansfield are back in the Football League as Conference champions

Mansfield Town won the title by beating Wrexham 1-0 on 20 April and are promoted to League Two. Wrexham and Newport County will contest the play-off final for the second promotion place on 5 May.

The bottom four teams are relegated, with AFC Telford United becoming the first side to lose their status in non-League's top flight after a 3-0 home defeat by Nuneaton on 30 March. Ebbsfleet United were relegated after their 3-1 defeat by Telford on 13 April, the same day that Barrow went down after losing 2-1 at Cambridge, and Stockport County joined them after their 4-0 defeat at Kidderminster on the final day of the season.

The relegated sides will be replaced by the champions and play-off winners of the Blue Square Bet North and South divisions.

Chester were promoted as North champions by beating Boston 1-0 on 6 April, while Guiseley, Brackley, Altrincham and FC Halifax will contest the play-offs.

Welling United were confirmed as South champions on 22 April after nearest rivals Salisbury were beaten 1-0 at Sutton United. Salisbury, Dover, Eastleigh and Chelmsford will contest the play-offs.

The Scottish Premier League split in half after all teams had played 33 games, with the top six and the bottom six playing the other teams in their 'half' for a fourth and final time.

Celtic celebrate their SPL win Celtic defeated Inverness to clinch the title

Celtic won the title on 21 April after defeating Inverness Caledonian Thistle 4-1 and will enter the Champions League at the second qualifying round stage.

The teams finishing second and third qualify for the Europa League along with the Scottish Cup winners. The cup winners enter the competition in the third qualifying round, the second and third-placed teams in the second qualifying round.

Motherwell clinched a Europa League place by beating Celtic on 28 April.

The top three countries in Uefa's Respect Fair Play league get an extra Europa League place, which is given to the highest-placed team in the top flight's Fair Play table that has not yet qualified for Europe.

In Uefa's interim rankings on 31 December 2012, Scotland were seventh in the Fair Play table.

The bottom club will be relegated to Division One. Dundee's poor goal difference means they look likely to go down unless they win their last three games and St Mirren lose their three remaining matches.

Champions Partick Thistle won the title with a 2-0 win at Falkirk on 20 April and will be promoted to the SPL, subject to meeting stadium criteria.

Bottom club Airdrie United will be relegated to Division Two after their 2-1 defeat to Partick on 13 April, while the ninth-placed team will enter a play-off with three Second Division sides. This will be Cowdenbeath, unless they beat Hamilton on the final day of the season and rivals Dunfermline fail to beat Airdrie.

Queen of the South clinched the Second Division title and automatic promotion with a 6-0 win at Brechin on 27 March.

The teams finishing second, third and fourth will enter a play-off with the ninth-placed First Division team. Alloa and Brechin are already sure of their play-off places, while Arbroath and Forfar will challenge for the final play-off place on the final day of the regular season.

The bottom team will be relegated to Division Three, with the ninth-placed team entering a play-off. Albion are relegated after losing 4-1 at Alloa on 27 April, while East Fife will enter the play-off unless they beat Brechin on the final day and nearest rivals Stranraer fail to beat Stenhousemuir.

Champions Rangers clinched the Division Three title on 30 March after they drew at Montrose, and will be promoted to Division Two.

Peterhead, Queen's Park and either Berwick, Montrose and Elgin will enter a play-off with the ninth-placed Second Division team - although goal difference means it will almost certainly be Berwick.

There is no relegation from this division, although East Stirling will finish as the bottom team in Scottish senior football.

NB Promotion and relegation in Scotland is subject to any league restructuring which may be voted in by the clubs.
